Dish network dvr help?

I have dish network at my house and we have two boxes. My problem is when we try to record or watch live tv. We have two boxes but the master box or box 1 when some one records it forces you to switch over on box 2. Is there a way to be able to keep the recordings on box one so it doesn't force box two to switch over and watch what is being recorded?
